Mark your calendars for Aug. 26, when The Perfect 10 Decathlon of Delights will be held at Fort Worth Country Day’s Sid W. Richardson Round Gym, 4200 Country Day Lane, Fort Worth, beginning at 6 p.m.
The event honors the memory of Barrett Martin Havran, a 1998 graduate of Country Day, and benefits athletics and community service at the school. Havran died in 2011 at age 31.
Head of School Eric Lombardi says he didn’t know Havran personally, but through his parents and former teachers and coaches he knows that the former student loved his school and was a gift to the community.
“His national-caliber athletic talents, his significant academic gifts and his wonderful servant leader personality meant he made a difference wherever he went and whatever he did,” Lombardi said.
The school will name its track the Barrett Havran Track and money raised by the event will be put into the endowment for track maintenance and for FWCD community service programming, school officials said.
“In naming the track for Barrett, we will have generations of Country Day community members who will come to know a young man who made us a better community,” Lombardi said.
Havran was a track star at FWDC and attended the University of Texas at Austin on a track scholarship. He graduated in May 2002 with a bachelor’s degree from UT’s McCombs School of Business. He then earned a law degree from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law in May 2006.
The Aug. 26 event will feature live and silent auctions and a raffle, and restaurant tasting from 14 of Fort Worth’s top restaurants.
It is being presented by the Dorothea Leonhardt Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas with Emmy Award-winning television sports anchor and broadcast journalist Scott Murray as master of ceremonies. Entertainment will be by Last Band Standing featuring Joe Breedlove, a 1978 graduate of Country Day.
At Country Day, Havran earned a number of honors and was captain of the track and football teams his senior year.
“Barrett was the quintessential student-athlete both in high school and college. While in high school, Barrett earned honors on stage as a performer and singer participating in spring musicals,” said Breedlove, executive director of Breakthrough Fort Worth and a longtime coach at Country Day. “In the classroom, he was a stellar student, earning honors in most subjects.”
He said Havran’s athletic ability was unquestionable, earning multiple awards in football, basketball and track and field.
“Track and field was his specialty – and he still holds school records. He was able to parlay his talents to earn a scholarship on the UT men’s track team,” Breedlove said.
“While achieving all these things, Barrett was a humble and kind young man with exceptional character. He was a friend to all and stood up for what was right, giving back to the FWCD and the greater Fort Worth community,” Breedlove said.
At UT, Havran was a member of the Big 12 men’s outdoor track and field championship team, and as a junior he was the ninth-ranked decathlete in school history and ranked 18th in the nation. Havran also was recognized for his academic achievements, including being selected for the Big 12 All-American Track and Field Academic First Team.
After college, Havran was active in a variety of organizations, including serving on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tarrant County board of directors and as a volunteer Big Brother.
He was a graduate of Leadership Fort Worth’s LeadingEdge program and was selected posthumously for the Fort Worth Business Press’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2011.
“Barrett Havran was selected for the very first class of LeadingEdge, a program developed by Leadership Fort Worth for emerging leaders in the 25-35 age range,” said Harriet B. Harral, executive director of Leadership Fort Worth.
“He was an excellent example of the kind of young professional who is finding new ways to connect and serve his community as well as seeking to further develop leadership skills. He was highly respected by his class, which committed to participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser that year in his memory. Barrett was a role model for many and was followed in the LeadingEdge program by his brother, Blake,” Harral said.
His parents, Joy Ann and Bob Havran, are chairing the event.
