Boys & Girls leader honored with national award

Daphne Barlow Stigliano, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth, has been named a 2013 Maytag Dependable Leader for her dependability and dedication to keeping youth on the path to achieve great futures. Through a national partnership, Maytag and Boys & Girls Clubs of America selected Stigliano as one of 25 leaders nationwide to receive the distinction, which includes a $20,000 grant to help the club deepen its impact in the local community. The award recognizes club professionals and volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of youth and are dependable and exceptional role models. “Receiving the Maytag Dependable Leader award is such a great honor. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Fort Worth organization,” Stigliano said. The Greater Fort Worth club, one of the largest affiliates in the country, serves more than 14,000 youth ages 6-24 and focuses on achieving academic success, healthy lifestyles and citizenship. Stigliano has led the club for nearly seven years; she started in 1998 as a volunteer and joined as an employee in 2001. The club has six branch locations, nine gang-intervention sites and multiple outreach programs, including Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search in the schools. Membership is $10 per year and no child is turned away for inability to pay. For information, visit www.FortWorthKids.org or call 817-834-4711.

Cyclists ride for MS During the first weekend in May, dozens of friends, family and corporate teams took to the road to help stop multiple sclerosis in its tracks. The 26th Annual Bike MS: Sam’s Club Ride featured a two-day trek of more than 150 miles from Frisco to Texas Motor Speedway and back to benefit the National MS Society. One team from Fort Worth was the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s “UNT Health’s Angels.” The team started in 2012 with 14 riders and raised $25,000. This year, the team more than doubled its size with 34 riders aiming to raise $32,000. To date, the team has brought in more than $34,000 with time remaining before the June 5 deadline. This year’s team included five medical students who are cycling enthusiasts and three department chairmen. Departments from UNT also came out to Texas Motor Speedway to do evaluations and physical therapy. The goal is to raise $1.8 million this year to help support research and programs/services offered through the National MS Society.
