Newsmakers: Purdue educator to lead UTA’s College of Education

Teresa Taber Doughty, associate dean of learning at Purdue University, has been named dean of the College of Education at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Doughty will begin her new duties on Aug. 1.

Doughty was selected through a national search and brings more than 30 years of experience as an educator, faculty member and university administrator. She was a teacher for children with disabilities in Alabama and Georgia before moving into faculty positions at Georgia State University, Oglethorpe University and Purdue.

Doughty is a past president of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children and is the organization’s executive director. During her 17-year career with Purdue, she represented the university on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s Statewide General Education Transfer Core Task Force, the National Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation Board of Visitors and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Board of Examiners.

Doughty has contributed to research that examined effective instructional strategies leading to increased community participation by individuals with severe disabilities and autism, assistive technology, stimulus control and transition planning. In 2013, she was inducted into the Purdue Book of Great Teachers, Center for Instructional Excellence.

“Dr. Doughty is a national scholar and proven leader who, through research, scholarship and teacher preparation, has helped to shape and enhance instruction for thousands of students across top-ranked institutions. I am confident that she will bring that same blueprint for success to UTA,” said university President Vistasp M. Karbhari.

Doughty earned her undergraduate degree in special education from Auburn University and her master’s degree and doctorate from Georgia State University.

Plano Mayor Pro Tem Lissa Smith was elected president of the North Central Texas Council of Governments’ Executive Board for a one-year term. The board is the policy-making body of the Council of Governments, which serves the 16 North Central Texas counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Erath, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Somervell, Tarrant and Wise.

Becky Renfro Borbolla, vice president of Renfro Foods Inc., was named chairman of the nonprofit trade group Specialty Food Association during the recent Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Jennifer Flanagan of Fort Worth to the Texas Board of Medical Radiologic Technology for a term to expire on Feb. 1, 2017. Flanagan is a registered radiologist assistant at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She is a member of the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists, Society of Radiology Physician Extenders and American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Government

Michael B. McClinton has been named coordinator of the Fort Worth Business Assistance Center, a department within the city of Fort Worth’s Economic Development department. Most recently, McClinton was a business instructor at Joliet Junior College in Illinois and a business adviser within its Small Business Development Center. McClinton has an extensive entrepreneurial background, having started and grown businesses across various industries, including real estate, retail, construction and transportation. He spent nearly seven years as an investment professional with the Northern Trust Co.

Honors & Awards

Dennis Mayhall, owner of 46 Domino’s stores in Fort Worth and surrounding areas, and co-owner of 213 Domino’s stores throughout the United States, was awarded the International Franchise Association Gold Franny Award for operational excellence. This is Mayhall’s fourth Gold Franny Award.

The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce brought home the gold from the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Excellence Awards. The awards honor organizations for exceptional efforts in marketing, communications and media outreach. The Grapevine Chamber won first place in the large chamber categories for Social Media Marketing, Directories/Community Profiles, Brochures and Newsletters/Newspapers. The chamber also won second place in websites.

Pulliam Pools was named to Pool and Spa News’ Top 50 Pool Builders List for 2016. The company has been recognized for 15 consecutive years, and this year ranked No. 2 for customer service.

Methodist Mansfield Medical Center was voted the Best Hospital and Best Emergency Department in the recent Living Magazine Best of Arlington and Mansfield Readers’ Choice Awards. This is the third consecutive year the hospital has won the award.

Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center-Fort Worth and Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas were re-designated with the Joint Commission’s Advanced Palliative Care Certification. The two hospitals are among only five facilities in Texas with the certification. Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas was the first program in Texas to receive the certification in September 2013. Baylor Scott & White-Fort Worth was first certified in 2014.

Manufacturing

Paul Morgan, an 18-year veteran with Acme Brick Co., has been promoted to vice president and chief financial officer to succeed the recently retired Judy Hunter. Morgan will be responsible for the finance, tax, accounting, credit, payroll, payables, planning/budgeting, and administrative services functions. Morgan, a certified public accountant, is a board member and treasurer for the Alzheimer’s Association, North Central Texas Chapter.

Marcelino Rodriguez, corporate controller and chief accounting officer of KMG Chemicals Inc., has been named vice president and chief financial officer of the firm. Rodriguez replaces Mindy Passmore, who has resigned to pursue other opportunities. As CFO, Rodriguez will oversee corporate finance, accounting, treasury, reporting and information systems technology. He is a certified public accountant and has more than 27 years of domestic and international experience in accounting, financial reporting, operating processes, and systems and information technology. Before joining KMG in March 2014, Rodriguez was CFO of Paul Mueller Co. Prior to that he was CFO of Lhoist North America.

Nonprofit Organizations

Adam Adolfo, artistic director of Artes de la Rosa Cultural Center for the Arts, will step down Sept. 30 from Fort Worth’s only Latino arts organization. He joined the nonprofit in 2009 as executive director and eventually was named artistic director. He has overseen seven seasons of theater, film and festivals. Previously he was executive artistic director for The Living Opera, general manager for Ohio’s Weathervane Playhouse and production associate at the Arizona Theatre Company. His work as a director has been seen throughout North Texas, including productions for QLive, Runway Theatre, Grand Prairie Arts Council, Onstage in Bedford and The Stolen Shakespeare Guild. He will next stage the regional premiere of the musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which opens July 23 at Artes de la Rosa.

Andrea Helms retired June 30 after serving 18 years as director of marketing and communications at Tarrant Area Food Bank. Stephen Russell takes over her responsibilities.

Technology

Joshua Robertson has been named president of E-Mist Innovations Inc., a maker of disinfecting equipment. Before joining E-Mist, Robertson launched National HME (NHME) in 2006. He led NHME to partner with more than 500 hospice programs, serve more than 500,000 patients and create nearly 500 jobs throughout the United States. In 2014, Robertson founded GrowCo Capital, a business focusing on investing resources into entrepreneurial businesses and real estate projects throughout the country. He is active in the Cowtown Angel Network and Project 4031 and is the founding president for the Rawls Raiders Alumni Network (Texas Tech University Business School).
