Forty years ago, five organizations – Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, Junior League of Fort Worth, Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University and the University of Texas at Arlington – partnered in a new era of leadership development in the community through the Leadership Fort Worth program. Since then, almost 2,000 individuals and 900 companies/organizations have participated in Leadership Fort Worth’s flagship program. Alumni and members of the current Leadership Class, as well as its youth leadership program Leader Kids and emerging leader program Leading Edge, will gather May 9 at the Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth Hotel for a dinner and program. Miller to keynote nonprofit conference The TCU Nonprofit Communicators Conference will celebrate its fifth annual gathering on May 17 with Kivi Leroux Miller as the keynote speaker. The conference is organized by the Schieffer School of Journalism, and Miller’s appearance is sponsored by the Community Foundation of North Texas. Miller will focus on effective ways for nonprofits to share their impact, and she’ll also conduct a workshop titled “Creating Your Donor Communication Plan.” Miller is the president of NonprofitMarketingGuide.com and EcoScribe Communications. She serves as a trainer, coach and consultant for small nonprofits nationwide and teaches a weekly webinar series that has reached more than 3,000 nonprofits in more than 30 countries. A Night with the Stars The Ben Hogan Foundation has paired with the Angela Stanford Foundation to host the second annual A Night with the Stars benefit on May 8 from 6:30-10 p.m. at the 81 Club at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. This year’s entertainment line-up will include singer-songwriters Patrick Davis, Thomas Rhett and Tracy Lawrence. Reservations are limited to 400 guests. Ayala KOs top honors Paulie Ayala, two-time champion boxer, Fort Worth native and champion of underprivileged youth, will be honored at the Tenth Annual Mike Moncrief Believing in Youth Awards Dinner May 16 at Ridglea Country Club in Fort Worth. Ayala will receive Santa Fe Youth Services’ Believing in Youth Award for helping young people gain self-esteem, responsibility and team building through athletic training and boxing. Also during the event, Community Hero Awards will be presented to Timeka Gordon and Georgi Roberts. Tickets for the VIP reception and dinner are $125 each. Humana donates to district walk The Humana Foundation is helping publicize the eighth annual Fort Worth Independent School District Walk with a donation of $15,000. The presentation was made at the Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences, FWISD’s medical high school, on March 25. The donation has allowed the district to provide more publicity for this annual fitness event by purchasing strategic billboards around Fort Worth. Last year Humana Foundation donated $10,000 to help with publicity, bottled water, transportation and promotional T-shirts. This year’s District Walk will take place on May 11 from 9-10 a.m. at every district high school athletic track. Those tracks are located at Arlington Heights High School, 4501 West Freeway; Diamond-Hill Jarvis High School, 1411 Maydell St.; Dunbar High School, 5700 Ramey Ave.; Eastern Hills High School, 5701 Shelton St.; North Side High School, 2211 McKinley Ave.; Paschal High School, 3001 Forest Park Blvd.; Polytechnic High School, 1300 Conner Ave.; South Hills High School, 6101 McCart Ave.; Southwest High School, 4100 Alta Mesa Blvd.; Trimble Technical High School, 1003 W. No pets are allowed and nothing with wheels except wheelchairs and strollers is allowed on the athletic tracks.
Fisher named Woman of Distinction Nancy Fisher, director of community development for the Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth, was named the 2013 Woman of Distinction by Altrusa International Inc. of Fort Worth. The award recognizes a local, non-Altrusa member for her outstanding performance, character and reputation in the community. As a member of the senior management team since 2010, Fisher leads the fundraising and community efforts for the Lighthouse. She has 25 years of experience in nonprofit management, with the last 20 being in the Tarrant County community.
