Citing “declining business conditions,” GE Transportation is laying off 250 workers at its Fort Worth plant.
The plant has been building an average of 10 locomotives a week, but in an earnings report in January, GE said its transportation unit had seen a slowdown year-over-year. The plant employed about 700 workers in 2016. The company’s plans were included in a WARN letter sent to the Texas Employment Commission on Feb. 1.
“We shipped 171 locos in the quarter versus 320 last year,” said Jeff Bornstein, GE Co. CFO in the company’s earnings call in January.
