DALLAS – Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors – 66 full-color portraits and a four-panel mural painted by President George W. Bush – is now open to the public through Oct. 1 at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
The portraits are of service members and veterans who have served the nation with honor since 9/11, and whom the Bush has come to know personally since leaving office.
“I painted these men and women as a way to honor their service to the country and to show my respect for their sacrifice and courage,” Bush said in a news release. “I hope to draw attention to the challenges some face when they come home and transition to civilian life — and the need for our country to better address them.” Bush wrote a story of each warrior to accompany the paintings.
Active duty military, retired service members, and U.S. military veterans will enjoy special admission pricing throughout the special exhibit’s run. In addition, active duty military and their family members will enjoy free admission as part of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Blue Star Museums program, May 29 through Sept. 4.
The Bush center is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
, the Bush Center was dedicated on April 25, 2013. The complex, which features a 15-acre park complete with native Texas wildflowers, plants, and an amphitheater, is home to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the 13th presidential library operated by the National Archives and Records Administration; the George W. Bush Institute, the non-partisan, public-policy arm of the Bush Center; Café 43, a full-service restaurant; and a museum store.
