One Safe Place, the Tarrant Regional Family Justice Center at 1100 Hemphill St., has announced a $1 million grant from the Burnett Foundation to its capital campaign.
One Safe Place opened on the Hemphill site in a collection of temporary trailers and just over two years later moved into its current renovated building at the same location in October 2014.
“We’re honored to have the tremendous support of The Burnett Foundation, particularly because of their long history of making a difference in Fort Worth and Tarrant County. The gift is instrumental in our efforts to move the One Safe Place capital campaign forward and key to our ability to serve thousands of victims of domestic violence and their children each year,” said Mike McMahon, donor relations at One Safe Place.
One Safe Place is part of Fort Worth’s Safe Cities Commission but has been operating under the One Safe Place name since mid-2015.
It is a family justice center, bringing together services from 39 partner agencies under one roof, dedicated to dealing with domestic violence intervention and prevention. Eighteen of those agencies, including the Fort Worth Police Department, Safe Haven of Tarrant County, The Ladder Alliance and ClaytonYES!, have full or part-time physical presence at the Hemphill location.
The concept originated in San Diego, Calif., with the opening of the San Diego Family Justice Center in 2002. In 2003, President George W. Bush announced the creation of the President’s Family Justice Center Initiative, with $20 million in funding and a specific objective to create 15 other centers around the nation.
One Safe Place offers services to victims at no cost and saw more than 3,000 clients in 2016, the organization said in a news release.
“The mission of One Safe Place is to reduce crime and violence in our neighborhoods, schools and homes,” the release said. “Other programs of One Safe Place include the award-winning Tarrant County Crime Stoppers, Imagine No Violence annual student art contest, Camp Hope Texas and Fort Worth Police Bike Support Group.”
Services provided at One Safe Place include counseling services, child witness assessment and intervention, childcare and development, food and clothing assistance, immigration services, job skills training, law enforcement and legal assistance, parenting and relationship education, spiritual support, victim advocacy and case management, and healthcare.
