Susan Hull, Grand Prairie ISD Superintendent
The Superintendent of Schools for the Grand Prairie Independent School District died after being critically injured in a motorcycle accident while on vacation in Arizona, the district announced Monday.
Dr. Susan Simpson Hull, Superintendent of Schools, was a Texas educator for 39 years, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent. She was in her 12th year as the Superintendent of the Grand Prairie ISD.
“This is a significant loss for the entire Grand Prairie ISD community as well as the education community at large,” said Burke Hall, president of the GPISD Board of Trustees. “Over the past 12 years, Dr. Hull has made a significant impact on GPISD and helped establish our reputation around the globe. She also made a lasting difference in school children around Texas through her advocacy and creativity. She will be sorely missed.”
As a Texas Superintendent for almost three decades, Hull served in five school districts.
Under Hull’s leadership, GPISD became a leader in school choice, providing families the opportunities to choose the educational experience best for their child. She has taken student achievement to the highest levels, providing students with life-changing opportunities.
“We are all profoundly shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Dr. Susan Simpson Hull,” said Kent P. Scribner, superintendent of the Fort Worth ISD. “She was not only an outstanding leader but a valued colleague and friend to all educators. Our prayers are with her family as well as with the Grand Prairie ISD school community.”
Teresa Taber Doughty, dean of the UTA College of Education, said: “We are incredibly saddened to learn of Dr. Hull’s unexpected passing. This is a loss for, Grand Prairie ISD, UTA, and Texas. She served as dedicated partner with UTA’s College of Education and was a leader, along with AISD in the launch of our Teacher Academy – a model grow-your-own program in Texas for preparing future teachers.”
Hull received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from East Texas State University in 1980 and 1989 respectively, and her superintendent certification from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1993. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University in 2003.
In 2005, she was selected as the Texas Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards and the Texas Association of School Administrators. She received a Gubernatorial Appointment to the State Board of Educator Certification and served for two years.
Hull and her husband Kent have four children and four grandchildren.
