Since 2022 Scottie Scheffler has been the hottest professional golfer in the sport. His win this past Sunday in the PGA Championship was his 15th since 2022 and his third major win in that span, along with The Masters in 2022 and 2024.
One tournament, however, the No. 1 player in the world has yet to win is one he’ll be competing in this week at Fort Worth’s Colonial Country Club. He is among the field of 135 players vying for part of the $9.5 million purse in the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Scheffler’s come close to capturing the title in Fort Worth twice. He was the runner-up last year to Davis Riley and tied for second last year behind Sam Burns.
Scheffler, ranked fourth among the FedEx Cup point leaders, is one 10 players among the top 20 in those rankings. Others are Andrew Novak (5), Maverick McNealy (11), JJ Spaun (12), Jhonattan Vegas (13), Tommy Fleetwood (14), Daniel Berger (15), Hideki Matsuyama (16), Ryan Gerard (17) and Brian Harman (18).
Scheffler, who also recently won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch in Dallas in early May, is one of several participants who come in with at least one tournament victory in 2025. Others include Matsuyama, Harman, Brian Campbell, Joe Highsmith, Ben Griffin, Andrew Novak, Harris English and Karl Vilips.
While Burns won’t be back to defend his title, Scheffler will be going up against 10 other former champions, including fellow local favorite Jordan Spieth, along with Riley, Berger, Emiliano Grillo, Chris Kirk, Kevin Kisner, Olin Browne, David Frost, and two-time champs Zach Johnson and Corey Pavin.
The field will include two Champions’ Choice invitees, Neal Shipley of the Netflix series “Full Swing” and Blades Brown.
After finishing as the low amateur in both the 2024 Masters Tournament and the 2024 U.S. Open, Shipley turned professional. His first event as a professional was at the Beachlands Victoria Open on the 2024 PGA Tour Americas, where he finished tied for ninth place.
Brown, who is turning 18 on May 21, broke the legendary Bobby Jones’ record as the youngest medalist at stroke play in U.S. Amateur history. Jones set the record at age 18 in 1920 and it stood until Brown broke it at age 16 in 2023, also shooting a course record 64 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver.
This year’s champion will pocket $1,710,000 and take home a one-of-a-kind champion’s prize, a fully restored, custom 1992 Schwab Defender. An iconic centerpiece of the Charles Schwab title sponsorship of the tournament, this year will be the sixth custom vehicle Schwab has awarded to the tournament champion.
