| On August 29, The Welman Project is launching Pages for the People, a free community bookshop! This new book access initiative empowers everyone to discover, share, and take home books at no cost. With both a free bookshop inside the new Welman HQ and a bookmobile out on the road, the goal is to build a community where stories, knowledge, and the joy of reading belong to everyone. Joining The Welman Project staff to lead this new program is Elizabeth Dragga, founder and former Executive Director of The Book Truck, a teen literacy nonprofit that served book deserts across Los Angeles for the past decade. Now Elizabeth has returned to her home state to address the growing need for book access here, bringing the Book Truck vehicle and her proven method with her. Through diverse book selection and trained peer volunteers, this program turns reluctant non-readers into lifelong book lovers, building the foundation for a brighter future. “Books are a powerful way to connect people with new ideas, new perspectives, and new possibilities,” said Elizabeth Dragga. “Pages for the People builds on The Welman Project’s mission by making great books accessible to everyone in our community.” Educators and the community are welcome to stop by and browse the shelves when the bookshop is open Tuesday 12-8 p.m., Wednesday-Friday 12-6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., during The Welman Project’s regular business hours. Visitors can donate up to one box of gently used books when they shop, or make an appointment for a larger amount. Book lovers are encouraged to join the bookshop volunteer team by signing up for a shift on the Welman website. The community is invited to join The Welman Project on Saturday, August 29th, from 10 am-3 pm to celebrate the launch of this new program with a day of book-filled fun with story times, book-themed crafts, and activities for readers of all ages.
