Ex-UNC president to move to Texas to advise policy nonprofit

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Soon after leaving her post as the president of the University of North Carolina system, Margaret Spellings already has a new gig lined up — in Texas.

Spellings told The News & Observer on Tuesday that she’s moving to Dallas next week to work as a consultant to Texas 2036, a nonprofit focusing on key public policy areas. Spellings’ departure from UNC was announced last fall. She’s under contract through March 1, but William Roper assumed the interim presidency Jan. 1.

Spellings says the nonprofit’s aims allow her to get back to the type of work she did as domestic policy adviser to President George W. Bush. She later served as Bush’s education secretary.

Texas 2036 founder Tom Luce says he hopes Spellings will become the group’s permanent leader.
