Jewel Marie Woods McKinney, 94, died May 23.
She served as Fort Worth District 6 council member from May 1991 until May 1997 when she lost to Clyde Picht and was preceded in death by her husbands, Grover Logan, Woodie Woods and David McKinney.
Both she and Woodie Woods served as mayors of Fort Worth. Mr. Woods served as mayor from 1979 to 1981 and died in September 1989. Mrs. McKinney was mayor pro tem when Mayor Kay Granger left office to campaign for the Texas 12th district U.S. House seat, and served as interim mayor from Dec. 20, 1995 to May 20, 1996.
Kenneth Barr was elected mayor in May 1996.
“Jewel was a strong advocate for her constituents. She had a business background and was supportive of the city’s business development efforts,” Barr said.
She was the founder and owner of Lone Star Card Company and also was a co-owner of Woodie Woods Plumbing.
Former District 4 Councilman Bill Meadows served with Mrs. McKinney for a few years and says he enjoyed knowing her.
“Although she was well known as the wife of well-known Mayor Woodie Woods (and also a heck of a good plumber) she was quite accomplished in her own right,” Meadows said. “She happened to be mayor pro tem when Kay Granger stepped down to run for Congress and assumed the mayor’s position. She served in that role for several months and handled the job with effectiveness and a bit of grace.”
Visitation was Sunday, May 30, at Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, and services Monday, June 1, 2020, at the same location.
The official obituary posted on the Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home website said that Mrs. McKinney was born Aug. 13, 1925, in San Antonio to John Jasper and Myrtle Mae McConnell.
She was a longtime member of Genesis United Methodist Church. Prior to her membership at Genesis she was also the organist and a member at Edgecliff United Methodist Church.
Mrs. McKinney was active with the Downtown singles group at First United Methodist Church. The family said she loved to travel, play golf and 42, dance, and sing, and was a member of the Goldtones Senior Choir.
Former District 4 Councilmember Becky Haskin sat next to Mrs. McKinney during council meetings.
“She was a great dancer,” Haskin said. “Always very active and I’m not surprised she outlived three husbands. She would love being the ‘swing’ vote, which drove me crazy.”
Survivors: Children, Mike Logan, Cheryl Doggett and husband George, and Don Logan; grandchildren, Christa Tillman and husband Will, Bobby Doggett and wife Rachelle, and Derek Logan; great grandchildren, Danielle Doggett, Derek Logan, Jr., and Cade Doggett and extended family.
