The Fort Worth Business Press received several awards for writing and newspaper excellence over the weekend. At the annual meeting of the Alliance of Area Business Publishers in Baltimore, the Business Press received a bronze (third-place) award in the category of “best personality profile” for a story by Austin Correspondent Dave Montgomery about state Rep. Charlie Geren. The profile was published in the July 29, 2014, issue of the Business Press.
At the Texas Press Association conference in Corpus Christi, the Business Press received a first-place award in the special sections category for our Nov. 18, 2013, presentation focusing on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The judges said of the section: “This was an excellent job of finding the local angle to a world-changing event. The fact that President Kennedy gave his last speech in Fort Worth was a great hook. From there the writing was excellent. The section contained lots of interesting anecdotes and memories from people who were there, as well as community members in general. Nice use of historical photos, and some of the portraits of those interviewed were excellent. A very well done piece.”
The Business Press also received a first place award for editorial writing. The judges called the winning editorials, written by News Editor Bill Thompson, “hard-hitting, well-reasoned and well-written calls for accountability.” In the category of column writing, the Business Press received a fourth place award for weekly “In-Market” columns written by Editor Robert Francis. The judges lauded the columns as “helpful to the community and relatable to the reader.”
