GRAPEVINE – GameStop Corp. announced Monday, March 5, that the company’s former CEO, J. Paul Raines, has died. He was 53.
Raines left GameStop in November because of what the company called “a reoccurrence of his previously disclosed medical issue and is seeking treatment.”
“We are profoundly sad to learn of the passing of our friend and former chief executive officer, J. Paul Raines,” said Michael K. Mauler, appointed in February, as the company’s new chief executive officer.
“His spirit is woven into the fabric of our company and the entire GameStop family mourns this loss. Paul was a brilliant man and remarkable visionary, as well as a compassionate, caring and inspirational community leader who was beloved by many,” Mauler said in a statement.
“Paul cared deeply about his work and his GameStop family, but his greatest love was for his family. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to them and all those whose lives and hearts Paul touched during his journey,” Mauler said.
GameStop announced in 2014 that Mr. Raines had been treated for a cancerous brain tumor.
Mauler has been with Grapevine-based GameStop for more than 16 years, serving previously as executive vice president and president of international, which consists of nearly 2,000 retail stores operating under the GameStop, EB Games, Micromania and Zing Pop Culture brands.
Prior to joining GameStop, Mauler held senior management positions with Baxter Healthcare, Dade Behring and Fisher Scientific, where he led operations for 22 countries.
