LISTEN: Amy Grant debuts new song at Union Gospel Mission luncheon

Singer Amy Grant plucked a few notes on her guitar then stopped.

“Now I can’t remember,” she said.

She tried again, attempting to recall the first few words of a song she had written last week. After playing a few measures, she stopped again. The crowd chuckled.

“Nobody can help me because nobody’s heard it,” she said.

But her memory returned shortly after, and she debuted her new song for guests at the Union Gospel Mission’s Heart in Motion for the Homeless luncheon on Tuesday.

Grant, who didn’t mention the title of the song, said her recent visit to the Union Gospel Mission reminded her of the concepts of mercy and helping others – the theme of the song she had written – so she decided to perform the number for the first time at the luncheon.

“The work there is definitely life-changing,” she said.

The luncheon took place at the Round Up Inn at Will Rogers Memorial Center – just minutes away from the Will Rogers Auditorium, where Grant sang at her first ticketed concert in 1978.

She said she was moved by the work of the Union Gospel Mission, telling the luncheon attendees that they were all part of the mission’s “story.”

“Because we’re all here today, we’re all part of the story of the mission,” Grant said. “I think being a part of something matters more and more as life goes on.”

Along with the new song, she also performed her song “If I Could See (What the Angels See).”
