Pat Massad: Longtime community leader will be missed

Patricia Helen Collins “Pat” Massad, a community leader with a long list of accomplishments, died peacefully at her home with her family by her side Feb. 17. She was 84.

“Pat Massad was a rare jewel, beautiful both inside and out,” said Joy Ann Havran, herself a prolific fundraiser for a number of charity and non-profit events. “She was a tireless volunteer and inspirational leader.”

Mrs. Massad was president of the Jewel Charity Ball in 1989.

“She set the bar for the Jewel Charity presidents, including myself, who followed her incredible year leading that organization. With her at the helm, Jewel Charity raised more than $1 million for Cook Children’s Medical Center, a feat never before accomplished in just one year. She will be greatly missed.”

Paul K. Harral, now associate editor of the Business Press but then a business columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, recalls that also.

“Pat called me early in that fund-raising year and told me that she wanted that campaign to be covered as a business story rather than a society or feature story,” he said. “She invited me into every step of the process.”

She was very determined, he said, and told him at the start that the ball would break the $1 million mark.

Mrs. Massad grew up in Fort Worth, the daughter of Victoria Madden Collins and Clyde Otto “Ted” Collins.
