KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Retailer Pier 1 Imports Inc. plans to close its seven stores across Hawaii including three on Oahu and two locations on the Big Island, officials said.

The company expects the stores to close in early 2020, West Hawaii Today reported Wednesday.

The timing of closures will vary for each location, a Pier 1 spokesperson said.

“Our stores are currently undergoing a store closing sale that will continue while merchandise is sold,” spokesperson Jennifer Reeder said.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based home goods retailer opened its first store on Hawaii island in Kailua in June 2012, followed by a store in Hilo in March 2014, officials said.

There are three stores on Oahu and one store each on Kauai and Maui.

Hawaii store information was removed from the Pier 1 website as of Monday and locations on the Big Island had signs advertising sales posted in windows, the newspaper reported.

The company is working with employees during the closures, Reeder said.

“Any time we make decisions about our business, we carefully consider the impact to our associates. We are working with them privately as part of the store closing process,” Reeder said.

Pier 1 did not provide details of store closures beyond Hawaii.

The company “previously announced our decision to close 70 stores and that we expected that number could increase,” Reeder said.
