Powell named new board chair for United Way

United Way of Tarrant County has announced James Powell as the new chairman of the board for the agency. Powell’s term begins immediately. He replaces Riz Chand, who stepped down to pursue new business opportunities out of state. Powell, who is assistant general counsel at the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), joined United Way of Tarrant County Board of Directors in 2009. He has served on numerous committees including the Executive, Strategic Planning and Governance Committees and was Co-Chairman of the organization’s annual Campaign in 2013 with his father, Charlie Powell. The board voted on Powell’s nomination March 29.

“I have been deeply involved with United Way of Tarrant County for many years and I am excited to continue supporting the organization as Chairman of the Board,” Powell said. “As Tarrant County continues to experience tremendous growth, so to do our communities’ needs. With the implementation of its strategic plan adopted last year and the results of the recent community assessment, the organization is well positioned to continue its longstanding leadership, advocacy and resourcing role in the community.”

In his capacity as chair, Powell will oversee actions by the board of directors and executive committee. He also will work with the organization’s executive team to execute its strategic plan and fulfill its mission to provide leadership and harness resources to solve Tarrant county’s toughest issues.
