WAELDER, Texas (AP) — The remains of a Texas soldier killed during the Korean War have been identified and are scheduled to be buried later this month near his hometown.
U.S. military officials announced Tuesday that the remains of 30-year-old Army Master Sgt. Charlie J. Mares of Waelder, Texas, were identified last month.
He’s scheduled to be buried March 29 in Cistern, which is near Interstate 10 about 80 miles northeast of San Antonio.
Mares was listed as missing in action following combat against Korean forces in July 1950.
His unidentified remains were interred in Honolulu for decades and then disinterred in October for an analysis that ultimately confirmed Mares’ identity.
More than 7,500 Americans remain unaccounted for from the Korean War.
