SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Readers of Texas Highways magazine have chosen San Antonio as their favorite destination in a countdown of the top 40 places to visit statewide.

Officials with Texas Highways, published monthly by the Texas Department of Transportation, made the announcement Tuesday in San Antonio.

The countdown helped celebrate the publication’s 40th anniversary. The choices started with the January issue of Texas Highways, which has about 200,000 subscribers and an estimated 400,000 monthly readers.

Readers noted San Antonio has a Sea World park, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Alamo, plus restaurants, shopping and accommodations.

Denton finished second in the rankings, followed by Waco, the Big Bend and the Hill Country. Rounding out the top 10 choices are Rockport-Fulton, Fredericksburg, Nacogdoches, New Braunfels and Palo Duro Canyon. Dallas-Fort Worth ranked 31st.
