TIMPSON, Texas (AP) — A sharp earth tremor rattled a rural East Texas area on Monday, causing little damage but startling residents.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 4:52 p.m. CDT Monday centered about 2 miles west-northwest of the town of Timpson. The town of about 1,200 residents about 150 miles east-southeast of Dallas and 60 miles southwest of Shreveport, La.
Police received reports of dishes and pictures falling from walls but no significant damage, said Timpson Officer Adam Renfro.
Renfro said he was standing near a house with picture windows when the earthquake hit. He could see the windows warping, “moving in and out,” without breaking, he said.
Annette Johnson was at her Timpson home when the tremor hit. “The house was shaking. The ceiling fan swung a little, and the crystals of our chandelier tinkled,” she said.
Johnson said her two beagles were startled and ran around the yard before settling.
Geological maps show the tremor occurred along a moderately active geological formation called the Mount Enterprise fault system.
