Mavs sign Carlisle to contract extension through 2021-’22

DALLAS (AP) — The Mavericks have signed coach Rick Carlisle to a five-year contract extension that could keep the franchise leader in victories in Dallas until at least 2022.

A person with knowledge of the deal says Carlisle is getting a five-year, $35 million extension that will kick in after the team option year in 2016-17. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because contract terms weren’t released.

Carlisle reached the deal Thursday, four days after he passed Don Nelson with career win No. 340. He led the Mavericks to their only championship in 2011 and just started his eighth season in Dallas.

The 56-year-old Carlisle has a record of 621-433 in a 14-year career that started with two seasons in Detroit and four with Indiana. He’s missed the playoffs just twice.
