“Captain America: Civil War” led the North American box office again, giving Walt Disney Co. the No. 1 position in theaters for a fifth straight weekend.
“Civil War,” now among the biggest superhero movies ever, generated weekend sales of $72.6 million in the U.S. and Canada, ComScore Inc. said Sunday in an emailed statement. That’s one of the biggest hauls ever for a movie in its second weekend. Two other new releases “Money Monster” and “The Darkness” placed third and fourth, respectively.
With two hits in theaters, “Civil War” and “The Jungle Book,” Disney has led the box office since mid-April, putting the company on track to set a single-year record for the industry, according to analysts. “The Jungle Book” landed in second place for the weekend, with sales of $17.8 million.
“Civil War” has raked in $940.9 million worldwide, Disney said in an emailed statement. Disney said the 13 “Marvel Cinematic Universe” films have brought in more than $10 billion over the past nine years.
