The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra announced Dec. 3 that two new members are being added to the orchestra in the 2018-2019 season.
Assistant Principal Flute Gabe Fridkis comes to the FWSO from the Chicago Civic Orchestra and will join the section under his brother and Principal Flute Jake Fridkis. Assistant Principal Oboe Tamer Edlebi joins the orchestra under Principal Oboe Jennifer Corning Lucio. Both musicians will begin performing with the orchestra on New Year’s Eve.
Fridkis is quickly establishing himself as a distinguished orchestral performer and sought-after soloist, the symphony said in a news release. Previously Fridkis was the Principal Flute in the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra in addition to being a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has also performed with the San Antonio Symphony, the Nashville Symphony, and has worked with conductors including Riccardo Muti, Christoph Eschenbach, Osmo Vanska, Ken-David Masur, and Robert Spano.
Fridkis has performed concerti as a soloist abroad in Italy, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Domestically he has performed the Ibert Concerto on multiple occasions as the winner of both the Purchase Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Jean and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition at the Brevard Music Festival. He has repeatedly appeared as a soloist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
He received a bachelor of music degree from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music in 2016 and a masters of music from DePaul University in 2018. Fridkis attended National Repertory Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Festival, and Banff Music Festival. He has premiered numerous works by noted composer Gary Schocker, both in duet with the composer and also with his brother and duo partner, Jake Fridkis.
Edlebi has made guest appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the Houston Grand Opera and Ballet orchestras. He has participated in numerous summer festivals, including the Kent/Blossom Music Festival, as well as four summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School where he studied with Richard Woodhams and Elaine Douvas.
Most recently, Edlebi served as principal oboe of Orquesta Sinfónica de MinerÃa in Mexico City performing not only standards of the orchestral repertoire, but many contemporary works by notable Mexican composers.
An avid lover of chamber music, Edlebi is a founding member of the Prismatics Woodwind Quintet, prizewinners of the 2015 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2017, he was named a Zarin Mehta Fellow through the New York Philharmonic Global Academy partnership with Rice University. Edlebi holds a bachelor’s degree from Chapman University where he studied with Ariana Ghez.
He also completed graduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Frank Rosenwein, and earned a master’s degree from Rice University as a student of Robert Atherholt. Other teachers include Adam Dinitz and Jonathan Fischer of the Houston Symphony.
