Hey, what happened to…? All the characters who didn’t make it into the ‘Game of Thrones’ season premiere

🕐 3 min read

The season premiere of “Game of Thrones” had us hopscotching all over Westeros and Essos, checking in with a lot of different characters. We even had to revisit the boring Sand Snakes. And yet, a bunch of people are still question marks.

Weren’t we supposed to make it to the Iron Islands? Wasn’t this the moment that Bran was going to start earning his screen time? Here’s a look at the characters we still need to catch up with and where we saw them last.

– Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), Hodor (Kristian Nairn) and Co.

Season six is supposedly Bran’s big moment, after the warging pro took last year off. But where is he? Apparently still hanging out with the Three-Eyed Raven and learning some tricks of the trade. He’ll be showing up in episode two, based on HBO’s plot synopsis.

– Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen)

Last time we saw the show’s ultimate puppetmaster, he had abandoned Sansa at Winterfell to meet with Cersei at King’s Landing, then threw the Queen Regent under the bus so that Olenna Tyrell wouldn’t reveal his role in Joffrey’s death. Scheming is hard work. If we had to guess, he’s probably off in the shadows somewhere pulling strings.

– Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Gilly (Hannah Murray)

Sam and Gilly were headed for safety in Oldtown with Little Sam at the end of season five. His plan was to become a maester, although the death of Jon Snow could alter his course.

– Bronn (Jerome Flynn)

After narrowly surviving a trip to Dorne, the jovial knight was last seen headed back to King’s Landing. His said he was off to marry a noblewoman, though who knows? Maybe he’ll end up reuniting with Tyene and her bad. …well, you know.

– Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman)

We didn’t see the spineless king at all in episode one, which is fine, since he doesn’t contribute much to the action anyway. Although that could change. During the next two episodes, he will apparently get some advice from his uncle/father then confront the High Sparrow. Unless he seriously toughens up, though, it’s hard to imagine him getting his bride back.

– Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju)

Everyone’s favorite bearded ginger and his wildling buddies made it to the (slightly) less dangerous side of the wall last season. Nevertheless he probably has some fighting ahead of him, considering Ser Davos sent Eddison to find Tormund to help defend Jon Snow’s body. Let’s hope he brings along Wun Wun.

– Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg)

We haven’t seen Olenna since she met with and threatened Lord Baelish. The sharp-tongued sage isn’t as fun as she used to be, what with the arrest of her grandchildren. We’re guessing she’s probably strategizing ways to get them out.

– Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha)

He blinded Arya and played dead, but that isn’t the last we’ll see of the Faceless Man. The appearance of the Waif (or was it the Waif?) in episode one proved that Arya’s training is just beginning, which probably means more cryptic Yoda speak and shape-shifting from Jaqen.

– Osha (Natalia Tena) and Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson)

The other littlest Stark hasn’t been seen in many moons. Let’s hope his wildling caretaker keeps him out of the hands of the Boltons this season. We’ve seen what they do to Starks and it isn’t pretty.

– Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon)

The tattooed Faith Militant member hasn’t been around since Cersei’s trial, but we know from the season six trailer that he has a showdown with the Mountain coming up. That probably won’t end well for him.

– Team Greyjoy

When do we get to go to the Iron Islands? According to episode photos and plot blurbs, the time is soon. Balon Greyjoy (Patrick Malahide) and his daughter Yara (Gemma Whelan) — the same one who tried to save her brother Theon from Ramsay — appear in the next episode.
