LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sherry Cervi won her fourth barrel racing season title Saturday night at the National Finals Rodeo, winning the 10-round aggregate title and earning her record-tying 10th paycheck.
Cervi, from Marana, Ariz., was fifth in the final round at 14.15 seconds. She topped the aggregate standings at 138.15 to break the record of 138.26 set by Jill Moody in 2010.
“It (winning the aggregate title) is special because getting around these barrels 10 times and being faster than anyone else here is so very, very hard to do,” Cervi said. “I am so proud of my horse and the consistency it takes to accomplish winning the average. I just feel it is an important way to finish what I started when I arrived here.”
She earned $4,808 in the round and made $47,776 for the aggregate title to push her season total to $303,317. She led all NFR competitors with $155,899.
Cervi is the fifth barrel racer in NFR history and first since Kristie Peterson in 1997 to finish in the six money-earning spots in all 10 rounds.
Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D., won the round at 13.88.
In tie-down roping, Shane Hanchey of Sulphur, La., topped the aggregate standings at 80.10 points to break the record of 84.00 set by Fred Whitfield in 1997. Hanchey earned the $47,776 bonus to take the season title with an event-record $207,672. He made $134,766 at the NFR.
Six-time world champion Cody Ohl of Hico, Texas, won the round in 6.6.
In bareback, Kaycee Feild of Payson, Utah, won his third consecutive title with $239,465, finishing fifth with an 83 on Fancy Free. Feild won the aggregate title at 823.
“Each one gets better for me,” Feild said. “That’s huge for me. I want to break records and I want to set my own records. I want to do things nobody’s done before. I got some inspiration from Bruce Ford telling my dad that I’m such a good rider.”
Casey Coletti of Pueblo, Colo., won the round with an 86.5 on Scarlett’s Web.
In steer wrestling, Hunter Cure of Holliday, Texas, finished fourth in 3.4 and took his first season title with $173,355. He was third in the aggregate at 53.10, earning $30,649.
“I’m trying to wrap my mind around it at the moment,” Cure said. “The key this week was a great horse and a great hazer, Riley Duvall. He did an unbelievable job all week long and I’m greatly appreciative.”
Wade Sumpter of Fowler, Colo., won the round in 3.4.
In team roping, header Clay Tryan of Billings, Mont., and heeler Jade Corkill of Fallon, Nev., took the season titles. Tryan earned $179,688, and Corkill made $178,057.
The teams of header Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, and heeler Patrick Smith of Lipan, Texas, and header Derrick Begay of Seba Dalkai, Ariz., and heeler Cesar de la Cruz of Tucson, Ariz., tied for first in the round at 4.4.
In saddle bronc, Chad Ferley of Oelrichs, S.D., won his second season title with $204,432 after finishing third in the aggregate standings with 725 points for nine rides to collect $30,649.
Ferley was third in the round with an 83.5 on Painted Feather.
Two-time world champion Cody Wright of Milford, Utah, won his second consecutive round with an 85 on Resistols Top Hat.
In bull riding, J.W. Harris of Mullin, Texas, wrapped up his fourth season title by tying for first Friday night, and finished with $252,829.
Cooper Davis of Jasper, Texas, won the round with an 84 on Palace Station John Doe.
In all-around, Brazile secured his record-breaking 19th gold buckle Tuesday night. Brazile made $197,285 at the NFR and finished the season with $426,011.
