NBC 5/Telemundo 39 seeking Project Innovation candidates

NBC 5/KXAS and Telemundo 39/KXTX have announced that their 2019 grant challenge will give local organizations a chance to compete for a total of $225,000 in awards.

Project Innovation is a competitive grant program presented locally by NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 in partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation.

Local organizations that are addressing local community issues through innovative solutions around four grant categories are eligible to apply.

Applications for Project Innovation open Jan. 11, 2019, and close on Feb. 15, 2019. Project Innovation 2019 grant winners will be announced by the stations in April 2019.

Project Innovation recipients must be physically located in the NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 market area, have an annual operating budget of more than $100,000, and are using innovation to inspire community solutions in any of the following four grant categories:

– Next Generation Storytellers: Programs that empower the next generation of storytellers and utilize media to drive social impact.

– Culture of Inclusion: Programs that seek to build pathways for diverse and equitable communities.

– Youth Education: Programs that equip youth with the tools they need to succeed, including STEM/ STEAM education.

¬– Community Engagement: Programs that enable individuals to engage and volunteer in their communities.

“We are amazed to see so many organizations striving for innovation and making a difference in the Dallas-Fort Worth community, especially those focused on a culture of inclusion and finding a way to increase community engagement,” NBC 5 President and General Manager Tom Ehlmann said in a news release.

“We are excited to serve our Spanish-speaking community by offering both English and Spanish language support and an online application process, which extends our reach to even more local non-profits in our area,” said John Trevino, Telemundo 39 president and general manager. “We are honored help contribute to the life-changing initiatives local organizations are spearheading to improve our community.”

Last year’s grants were to the Junior Players Guild; the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity; the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas; Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County; The Artist Outreach; and Solar Car Challenge Foundation.

The stations have launched dedicated Project Innovation websites that provide program, rules/eligibility information and grant applications in English and Spanish, to help more bilingual service organizations access the information they need to apply and be considered for a grant.
