On the desk of Andrew Walker

On the desk of Andrew Walker Director, The Amon Carter Museum

Andrew Walker is much like the museum he runs – classy, lean, flexible. His desk is the same way. As he readies for a series of meetings on the museum’s strategic initiative, Walker greets visitors in an open collar shirt because his tie is resting on his desk (he puts it on when he has to), which displays everything from a to-do list in a big red folder to a small inspirational artwork to an awfully green Incredible Hulk action figure. Here’s what’s on his desk:

Rolodex: Remember these rotating file devices? He has two of them. “I don’t use them as much as I used to, but it’s kind of like having a diary.”

Landscape art work: Part of his own untrained artist collection. “It’s my little inspiration. I just love having it right here in front of me.”

Aligned Action: The Key to CEO Effectiveness. “It’s about finding an alignment within your team and being able to carry that vision and give that direction.”

Incredible Hulk: Gift from his son, who shares his passion for action figures. “It’s a return for me to my childhood. The Hulk is what he’s always seen me as. Hopefully it’s the attribute of determination and not of anger.”

Greatest. Dad. Ever: Wall display showing an article written about him in 360 West.

Red “Today” folder: “Has what I have to do and when I have to do it. It’s kind of my road map for the day. Some days it’s quite full.”

The desk: Once L-shaped, he added a long, narrow table to give a sort of U-shape and the ability to place chairs in front. Behind the chairs is a cozy sitting area for more intimate conversation. “My sense is that this is a meeting room, a place to come in the best circumstances to have ideas and to exchange those ideas. I wanted it to be a desk situation where I’m looking outward.”

No Place Like Home: American Scene Painting in the Sinquefield Collection: Includes paintings, drawings and lithographs from the private collection of Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield. “My tagline is that the collector is the lifeblood of any art museum.“

Quote: “Being free, we have the opportunity to really provide access to everybody. We have a social responsibility to serve our audience in a very active, participatory way.”
