Fritz Rahr, owner Rahr & Sons Brewing Company
Visiting Rahr & Sons Brewing Company is like stepping into an episode of Mad Men. The chairs, the tables and, of course, the desk: 1950s through and through. In fact, the desk belonged to his Rahr’s father, who took over the family business that started way, way back in 1847. Rahr is celebrating his own 10-year anniversary. Here’s what else we found lurking on – or near – his desk.
Quote: “Dad worked for the family business for, I don’t know, 40 plus years. When he retired and moved out of his office, I got his 1950’s era office furniture, which I’m so proud to have.”
Chicken Hat: Wears it proudly during Octoberfest. 5K fun run. “The way I see it, everybody needs a chicken hat.”
Dad’s Desk. “This is my dad’s desk from the 1950’s out of his office. Most of the furniture is from that 1950’s Mad Men kind of era. It’s awesome to have this stuff, especially the desk.”
Cup of Coffee: “I usually have one cup a day. That’s it. Usually in the morning.” Evenings are reserved for his Scotch.
Guitar(s): Three in the office, a few others at home. “I’ve been known to pick it up and sing a few songs but, no, I haven’t actively gone out to play in a club. Not yet. Well, probably never.”
Beer mementos. Collects old beer paraphernalia, especially if it has Rahr on it. Finds some on his travels, others on eBay, others in antique stores, and some are sent in from friends, customers or colleagues. “Over 68 years there’s always something with Rahr on it.”
TCU, Green Bay Packers helmets. Packers helmet is gift from friend and fellow TCU grad Marshall Newhouse, a former starting strong tackle for Green Bay now with the Cincinnati Bengals. TCU helmet is self-explanatory.
1950’s Pin Up Girl. That’s Miss Minnesota, a Julliard opera singer and Rahr’s mother, circa 1952. She was second runner up of Miss Universe the same year.
