School bus gridlock at Bass Hall? Nope, it was a student musical showcase

Wondering what all those school buses were doing around Bass Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 21? They were ferrying students from the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD to the hall.

Not as audience members, but as performers.

The show featured dance teams, choirs, bands and ensemble performances from elementary grades through high school in the district’s Fine Arts Program. The students performed for an almost-sold-out crowd of parents, teachers and friends.

One performance, paying homage to the story of the sailors who died when the USS Indianapolis was sunk in World War II after delivering the world’s first operational atomic bomb to the island of Tinian, drew a standing ovation from the audience. Of the 1,196 sailors aboard the ship, only 317 survived.

The performance, Homeward Bound – A Story of the USS Indianapolis, was dedicated to Marzie Joe Robison and the crew of the ship. Robison was the great uncle of Wayside Middle School Honors Band Director Terry Parrish.

Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD Fine Arts Director Shawn Bell said in a program note that the event showcased the district’s students in a “very special way.”
