SMU to begin beer sales at fall football games

DALLAS (AP) – Southern Methodist University has decided to allow beer sales at football games this fall.

Athletic department spokesman Brad Sutton said Wednesday that the plan is to start selling beer at Gerald J. Ford Stadium when SMU’s Mustangs open their home schedule Sept. 20 against Texas A&M. Alcohol is already permitted in stadium luxury suites.

The decision follows SMU’s introduction of beer sales at Moody Coliseum basketball games last January. Beer was sold to fans who were 21 years old and over but customers were limited to three beers per game. Stubs on wristbands were used to confirm purchases.

Sutton said the plan for Moody Coliseum was safe and successful. He said the process for beer sales at Ford Stadium, a venue that seats about 32,000, will be carefully designed and vetted. He declined to release details.
