USS Fort Worth

The USS Fort Worth Support Committee, a 501c3 nonprofit that provides morale support to the crew members and officers aboard the USS Fort Worth, is hosting its first ever Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta from 4-8 p.m. June 22 at Fort Worth’s Panther Island Pavilion, a news release announced.

USS Fort Worth Captain CDR Antonio Hyde and 4 crew members will be in Fort Worth to spread community awareness about the ship and their accomplishments.

According to the release, the crew will have a team also competing in the regatta, which challenges teams to build a boat out of recycled/reusable materials and then have one member of the ream take the boat into the Trinity River from the beach at Panther Island Pavilion for a race.

Though teams are still sighing up, the current teams competing include:

The USS Fort Worth Support Committee will also hold a care package collection of sunscreen and lip balms, the release stated. Additionally, the Welman Project will be on site with materials to build boats and also will take donations of gently used or new school supplies and arts and crafts supplies, and Commodity Recycling Solutions will also provide recyclable materials for boat building and collect recyclables while on-site.

According to the release, other partners include All Star Corrugated, who donated cardboard sheets, and Junk King, who donated a dumpster to ensure the river is left at least as clean as it was prior to the event.

Finally, a kids corner will be set up in the shade for kids to make mini boats out of smaller recyclables to race in a kiddy pool; and Fajita Freaks food truck will be available to serve up dinner.
