Van Cliburn Competition: Finalists named

Leonard Slatkin, chairman of the Jury for the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (taking place May 25-June 10, 2017, at Bass Performance Hall), announced the six pianists advancing to Final Round.

In the Semifinal Round, which took place June 1–5, 12 semifinalists each performed a 60-minute solo recital as well as a Mozart piano concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Nicholas McGegan. They performed live at Bass Hall before the nine-member Jury and hundreds of patrons, as well as to a worldwide audience via the Competition’s live, fully produced webcast. The Final Round

In the Final Round, June 7–10, each competitor performs twice. On June 7–8, each finalist will join the Brentano String Quartet for a piano quintet he or she has chosen from a list of four (by Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, and Schumann). Then, on June 9–10, each will perform a concerto of his or her choice with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, who is also chairman of the Jury this year.

The winners of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be announced in the Awards Ceremony, which begins 7 p.m. Saturday, June 10 on Bass Performance Hall stage.

Final Round in Cinemas

For the first time ever, the last two concerts of the Final Round will be shown in cinemas nationwide, through a partnership with Fathom Events. The broadcast starts 11:55 a.m. Central Time on Saturday, June 10. It begins with a delayed presentation of Friday night’s performances, leading into a live simulcast of Saturday afternoon’s performances. The presentation will feature all six finalists in their final concertos with orchestra. Patrons can search for theaters and purchase tickets at www.fathomevents.com.

Final Round Simulcast and Public Closing Party in Sundance Square

Also for the first time, the final two concerts, Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, will be simulcast on a large screen in Sundance Square Plaza in downtown Fort Worth for free public viewing. The broadcasts begin 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10. The Saturday simulcast includes the Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. The Competition closing party in Sundance Square Plaza begins 8 p.m. Saturday and will be free and open to the public, with a cash bar and live music by Adonis Rose and the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra.
