Whole Foods to distribute beer from in-house brewery

Whole Foods is adding an in-house brewery to its operations. Whole Foods Market Brewing Company, the first craft brewery in a grocery store, will begin distribution of its first draft beer in two phases, starting with the Greater Houston area on Aug. 8, followed by the launch of statewide distribution in Texas on Sept. 18.

The first beer for Houston distribution will be a Post Oak Pale Ale, a deep golden beer with orange marmalade, tangerine, grapefruit, and tropical flavors.

Post Oak Pale Ale is one of 38 beers produced by the Whole Foods Market Brewing Company, located inside the company’s Post Oak store in Houston. To date, more than 5,220 gallons of beer have been produced in Houston, and a Whole Foods Market store in San Jose, California, has opened the company’s second onsite brewery.

The Austin-based specialty grocer first announced it was opening a brewing business in 2014 and soon hired Dave Ohmer, a Tennessee brew master.
