Bob and Pat Schieffer have established the Gladys Payne Schieffer Scholarship, named in honor of his mother, at Texas Christian University.

The scholarship initially will provide full tuition, room, board, books, fees and other educational expenses to as many as four students each year. Schieffer Scholars also will receive “Discovery Funds” to pursue study abroad, internships and undergraduate research.

Each scholarship is valued at more than $250,000, according to TCU officials.

A legendary CBS news anchor, Schieffer graduated from TCU in 1959 and is the namesake of the university’s Bob Schieffer College of Communication. He hosted the annual Schieffer Symposium on the News at TCU from 2005 to 2015, attracting news luminaries such as Jane Pauley, Bob Woodward, Tom Brokaw, Jim Lehrer, David Brooks, Gwen Ifill and Arianna Huffington to serve as panelists. Schieffer’s contributions have been recognized with virtually every award in broadcast journalism as well as an honorary doctorate from TCU.

Pat Schieffer is a 1961 graduate of TCU and a longtime member of the university’s board of trustees. The Schieffers served as honorary co-chairmen of the Campaign for TCU, which ended in 2012 after raising $434.1 million. She also served on the boards of the Meridian Foundation, the National Cathedral School, the Beauvoir School and the Masters School.

“We have long enjoyed our relationship with TCU and will continue to support the development and growth of the university,” Pat Schieffer said. “We hope that these scholarships have a lasting impact on the lives of the young people who benefit from them.”

TCU admission staff members will select Schieffer Scholarship nominees from the freshman applicant pool. In addition to high scholastic achievement and financial need, students’ service and leadership qualities will be considered. A committee of administrators will recommend finalists to Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr., who will make the final selections.

Over the course of their undergraduate careers, Schieffer Scholars will have opportunities to interact with one another and with the chancellor. As the program matures, the community of Schieffer Scholar alumni will provide networking and mentoring support to one another and to current scholarship recipients.
