Because they served and protected our nation, it’s our job to now serve and protect them.
That’s the idea behind United in Service, a free program for veterans, active-duty military and their families, on Oct. 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.. The event is being put on by Tarleton State University Fort Worth and the United Way of Tarrant County and will take place on the TSU Fort Worth campus, 10850 Texan Rider Dr.
“This is a free, family-friendly event designed to connect our military community with resources and support, all in one place,” said Dr. Saranya Graf, Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications at TSU. “We’ll have trusted community partners offering education, employment and community resources.”
Attendees can participate in breakout sessions, explore a resource fair, enjoy food and family-friendly activities, and even receive free professional headshots. Families are welcome to come and go throughout the day, making it easy to participate on their own schedules.
“Our veterans and military families have given so much in service to our country, and we want to make sure they know their community is here to support them,” Graf said. “Navigating available resources can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when families don’t know where to start.”
United in Service removes some of those barriers by bringing organizations and services together in one convenient location. “Our goal is to make it easier for veterans and their families to find the support they need, build connections and thrive,” Graf said.
Available workshops include:
10:30–11 a.m., Texan Bound: Veteran Friendly Support Programs plus Tarleton State At-a-Glance.
11:15 a.m.-noon, Using Your Educational Benefits for Veterans and Military-Connected Families.
1-1:45 p.m.: Career and Workforce Readiness: The Ultimate Guide – Texas Veterans Commission.
The day will include fun activities for all ages, such as family games, lawn games, military trucks, coloring areas, kites, a DJ and even a taco truck.
Oh, and yes, Tarleston State’s loveable mascot, Oscar P the duck, will be there. Legend has it that he waddled all the way from Tennessee with his owner and university namesake John Tarleton.
Resources for the event include Tarrant Area Food Bank Red Bus, Meals on Wheels, United Way, UWTC Doula Program, Mission United|Texas Veterans Network Area Agency on Aging, and Tarleton State University Resources.
