STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University’s men’s rodeo teams each posted season-high point totals to take first place at the Howard College Rodeo this past weekend in Big Spring.
The men, led by a top five sweep in saddle bronc riding, amassed 675 points. The women’s team collected 478.33 points paced by four goat tyers in the event’s top 10.
Bailey Small posted a long go-best 85 points then added an 84.5 in the finals for a 169.5 to win in saddle bronc riding. Teammate Cauy Masters was second with a two head 167.5, including the rodeo’s top score, an 87.5 in the short go. Gus Gaillard’s 80-84-164 was third, Montgomery Parsons took fourth with a 77.5-85-162.5 and Waitley Sharo secured fifth with a 76-82-158.
Landris White’s first-place 11.0 combined time in steer wrestling featured a 5.5 in the championship round, best in the finals. Mason Spain earned an event-best 83.5 in the first round of bull riding on his way to a 162 second-place tally while bareback rider Roedy Farrell was runner up with his 75-79.5-154.5.
On the women’s side, Tori Brower flashed times of 8.0 and 8.5 for a 16.5 total to win the goat tying crown in Big Spring. Keni Labrum was second with runs of 8.5 and 8.6 for a combined 17.1. Rylee Abel finished fourth in the average with her 8.8-8.9-17.7 and Hattie Hayes’ 8.9-9.6-18.5 was ninth.
Kaylie Garza’s 2.8-12.1-14.9 was third in breakaway roping and Jacelyn Frost’s first-round 2.4, tops in the go, gave her sixth overall.
Both teams are atop the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region leaderboards and will host the regular season finale, the Tarleton Stampede, April 24-26 in Stephenville.
