Tarleton State expands freshman aid program to include Fort Worth campus

Tarleton State University is expanding its Tarleton Promise Program to give eligible first-year students the opportunity to attend the university’s Fort Worth campus free of tuition and fees.

Tarleton State President Dr. James Hurley launched the Tarleton Promise Program upon his arrival in 2019 with the goal of providing additional institutional aid to eligible, incoming freshmen whose direct college expenses are not covered by federal and state aid. As the institution welcomes its inaugural freshman class to the Fort Worth campus this fall, Tarleton State is growing the program to meet the specific needs of this new student population. the university said in a news release.

“We believe that a student’s financial situation should never prevent them from earning a college degree,” Hurley said in the release. “Our university was founded as an institution of opportunity, and the Tarleton Promise Program is one way that we continue to live out that legacy.”

Eligible students must complete both the FAFSA and general scholarship applications and meet the following criteria, officials said:

  • Texas resident
  • Pell Grant eligible
  • Family adjusted gross income of $85,000 or less
  • Graduated in the top 50% of their high school graduating class

The university’s financial aid office will notify recipients of their award, which is renewable for up to four years if the student remains enrolled full time and meets satisfactory progress requirements toward degree completion.

“Our goal is to remove barriers for high-performing students who have the most financial need,” said Dr. Rachael Capua, dean of Tarleton State Fort Worth and vice president for external operations. “This is an important step to increasing access and opportunity as we prepare to welcome our inaugural first-year class later this year.”

Tarleton announced in March that its 80-acre campus just off Chisholm Trail Parkway in southwest Fort Worth would begin offering first- and second-year courses beginning this fall. The campus previously offered courses only for upper-level and graduate students.

The new course offerings, which will be available for 24 undergraduate programs with more expected in 2025, will make it possible for first-year students to attend Tarleton State in either Stephenville or Fort Worth, the university said.
