The state’s primary power operator encourages homeowners and businesses to minimize electrical usage today as icy temperatures accelerate heating usage.

As of 7:43 a.m., the Electric Reliability Council of Texas was operating under “power watch” conditions, which urge customers to use less electricity to prevent rolling outages if demand exceeds supply.

Consumers can help by turning off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances, raising thermostats by two degrees, and ensuring pool pumps are not operating during peak demand hours of 3-7 p.m.,” reads a portion of the agency’s website.
