Greyhounds gone, future uncertain for last Texas dog track

LA MARQUE, Texas (AP) — The last Texas dog racing track to hold regular live races no longer has any dogs.

Officials at Gulf Greyhound Park, in La Marque between Galveston and Houston, suspended racing last month, blaming competition of Louisiana casinos, rising costs and inability to get expanded gambling authorized at the track.

The park’s general manager, Sally Briggs, tells The Galveston County Daily News (http://bit.ly/1WkRU0I ) her goal once the place shut was to ensure every greyhound was cared for. She says the 60 dogs at the park when racing halted now have been adopted or sent to tracks in Arizona, Florida and Mexico to continue racing.

The track’s future is uncertain although officials are hoping to remain open for simulcasting from other tracks. That’s a decision up to the Texas Racing Commission.
