Rangers put Josh Hamilton on unconditional release waivers

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Texas Rangers have placed outfielder Josh Hamilton on unconditional release waivers as he tries to come back from a series of operations on his left knee.

The Rangers activated him off the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday and put him on waivers. They also recalled right-hander Shawn Tolleson from the minors and put him on the 60-day DL, creating a spot for left-hander Derek Holland to return from the disabled list and start against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

The move with Hamilton was expected. He had surgery on the left knee on June 8 to reconstruct the ACL and repair cartilage damage — his third operation on the knee since September. He’s hoping to be ready to play by spring training.
