Rodeo Teams Post Impressive Wins To Open Spring Season

Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams combined for a whopping 975 points as both posted dominant first-place finishes at last week’s Fort Worth Stock Show Collegiate Rodeo, the first outing of the spring season. Led by a sweep of rough stock events, the men’s team accumulated 510 points, while the women’s championship effort featured wins in two of three events and a 465-point team total.

The teams’ dominance in Cowtown featured top performances in five of nine events, which kept the men and women at the top of the team leaderboard in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Lone Star Region. In addition, seven Tarleton State riders and ropers lead their events in the regional standings.

Lone Star Region leading bareback rider Devon Moore posted the top scores in both the long go-round and the finals to lead a sweep of the top five places in the event’s average. Moore turned in an 84.5 in the preliminary round, then added a finals-best 87.5 for a 172 total. Daxtyn Field was runner-up with his 83-81.5 — 164.5 and Weston Chandler took third with a 160 on twin 80s. Regional all-around leader Clay Greenslade was fourth with his 75-76 —151 and Taylon Carmody’s 69-74 — 143 was fifth.

Devon Hay took a long-go best 82 into the saddle bronc finals, where he added a 77 and finished first with his combined 159. Teammate Montgomery Parsons’ second-place 156.5 featured an 81, the top score in the finals. Greenslade was third with a 76-77 — 153, Lone Star event leader Waitley Sharon’s 74-78.5 — 152.5 was fourth and Cooper Lane turned in a 74-75 — 149 for fifth.

Bull rider Zane Monnett, currently in second in the Lone Star all-around race, earned top scores in both rounds on the way to an event title in Fort Worth, posting an 81-79.5 — 160.5.

Tie down ropers Dalton Porch and Lucca Alvarenga Kotscho tied for third with identical two-run 12.9s, Porch on times of 8.4 and 8.6 seconds and Alvarenga on an 8.3 and an 8.7. Travis Stanley’s 9.2-9.2 — 18.4 was good for seventh.

Tarleton State heeler Conner Callihan partnered with Ranger College header Kutter Babb for a 5.8-11.1 — 16.9, good for fourth in team roping. Levi DeLuna and Kreece Dearing were fifth with their 7.4-12.2 — 19.6. Steer wrestler Rawley Arballo’s 4.5-5.5 — 10 earned a fourth-place finish in the event while teammate Dearing took fifth with a 5-5.3 — 10.3.

Tarleton State’s dominance in the women’s events featured a first-place tie by breakaway ropers Jenna Fulton and Emilee Charlesworth. Each flashed a two-run 4.8, Fulton on a long-go best 2.5 coupled with a 2.3 in the finals, and Charlesworth on her 2.6 and 2.2-second efforts.

In all, Tarleton State took six spots in the event’s top 10. Makalyee Fischer’s 2.6-2.7 — 5.3 was fifth, Kieley Walz took sixth with her 2.3-3.3 — 5.6, Addy Gose’s 2.6-4.2 — 6.8 was seventh and Lauren Barton took ninth with a combined 14.5 on runs of 2.4 and 12.1.

Faith Lundberg paced a group of four Tarleton State goat tyers who placed in the rodeo’s top five. Lundberg turned in a 6.4-second time in the long go-round and added a 6.2 in the finals for a 12.6, good for first place in the average. Rylee Abel, regional all-around leader, and Kaylie Garza, event leader in the current Lone Star standings, tied for third with identical 12.9s. Abel’s total came on runs of 6.6 and 6.3. Garza’s featured a long-go best 6.0 and a 6.9 in the finals.

Led by Charlesworth’s third place 16.92-16.92 — 33.84, Tarleton State took four spots in the barrel racing finals. Lindsey-Kay Reichert’s 16.82-17.18 — 34 was sixth, Breckyn Tippen was seventh with a 34.13 on runs of 16.99 and 17.14, and Ashlyn Goven took 10th with her 16.94-22.07 — 39.01.

Both Tarleton State teams continue the spring season at the South Texas Collegiate Classic March 5-7 in San Antonio
