Spence to fight in hometown area vs. Ocampo in June

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., will defend his IBF title on June 16 at Frisco’s Ford Center against unbeaten mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo.

Spence, considered by many the best all-around fighter in the world, won the 147-pound crown last May from Kell Brook. His only defense, pushing his record to 23-0 with 20 knockouts, came against former two-division champion Lamont Peterson, stopping him with a seventh-round knockout on Jan. 20.

Ocampo (22-0, 13 KOs), of Mexico, will be fighting professionally outside of Mexico for the first time.

“I’m honored to be fighting before my hometown fans and the people who have supported me from the beginning,” said Spence, who lives in DeSoto and last fought locally in 2015 when he knocked out Alejandro Barrera at The Bomb Factory in Dallas.
