TCU loses to NC State, will face Stony Brook on Sunday in NCAA tourney

FORT WORTH (AP) — Chance Shepard hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, leading North Carolina State past TCU 5-4 on Saturday night in the Fort Worth Regional.

NC State (36-21) advanced to the championship round of the regional, while TCU (44-12) plays Stony Brook in an elimination game Sunday. The teams traded leads five times in a contentious meeting that included a shouting match between coaches after alternating hard tags and slides.

Riley Ferrell (1-3) struck out the first two batters in the ninth before walking Ryan Willard. Shepard came up and sent a pitch from Ferrell over the center-field fence to put NC State ahead.

Travis Orwig (2-0) gave up a leadoff double to Nolan Brown in the bottom of the inning, but got the next three batters to seal the win.
