WHAT’S AT STAKE
The Battle for the Iron Skillet, the trophy that stays with the winner of the game between the former Southwest Conference rivals in Dallas and Fort Worth. TCU is trying to finish its non-conference schedule without a loss while SMU is trying to get a win before starting American Athletic Conference play. The Horned Frogs are 13-4 against SMU since the SWC dissolved after the 1995 season.
KEY MATCHUP
QB Trevone Boykin and TCU’s new spread offense vs. SMU defense. The Mustangs have struggled against similar offenses already this season in three lopsided losses, but Boykin and the Frogs are coming off their second bye week in three weeks and could need some time to get into some kind of rhythm.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
TCU: LB Paul Dawson has 24 tackles (15 solos, nine assists) with four tackles for loss. He also has an interception, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups.
SMU: Garrett Krstich, the fourth different quarterback used by the Mustangs this season, is expected to make his first college start. The junior completed 13 of 24 passes for 137 yards without an interception after he took over in the second quarter of last week’s game for ineffective starter Kolney Cassell, starting in place of injured Neal Burcham.
