Hearts of the Stock Show: Sipping a Cool Slushy in a Pineapple

Journey Johnson, 11, wasn’t quite sure she could finish her big pineapple-coconut slushy drink froth with whipped cream laced in chocolate syrup and once topped with a cherry.

Journey, her 5-year-old sister Jewel Johnson and Mom Kelly Johnson were touring the commercial exhibits at the Stock Show while Dad Justin Johnson, a 6666 Ranch cowboy, was elsewhere on the grounds preparing to help judge the Best of the West Invitational Ranch Rodeo in Will Rogers Coliseum. Kelly and Justin’s son, Riggin Johnson, 17, shows and competes on quarter horses along with Dad; they’re members of the American Quarter Horse Association.

They live in the Guthrie area while Kelly Johnson teaches 3rd grade in nearby Paducah, and that’s a challenge as the students approach taking the state-mandated STAAR Exams, Kelly said.

“We’re show and rodeo regulars,” she said.
