Two of the of the greatest things ever to come to Fort Worth are turning 80 years old.
Kincaid’s hamburgers and Colonial Country Club hosting an annual professional golf tournament have been mainstays in these parts since 1946. They are co-celebrating their landmark birthdays this month at the Charles Schwab Challenge May 27-31.
And, while a stop at Kincaid’s before going to Colonial has long been a thing for many folks, now, for the first time ever, you can enjoy munching down on that big ol’ burger while your favorite golfer chases a birdie.
Kincaid’s will be bringing their famous, award-winning hamburgers to fans at the tournament. Their burgers will be served in the three on-course Villages, to fans at the concession location at hole No. 13, Thursday thru Sunday, and in corporate suites on Saturday.
“For 80 years, Kincaid’s Hamburgers has proudly served Fort Worth, and we’re deeply honored to celebrate alongside the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial as it marks its 80th anniversary,” said Kindcaid’s co-owner Jonathan Gentry. “Being part of this community has always meant more to us than just great food – it’s about tradition, connection, and the people who make Fort Worth feel like home.
“We’re grateful to stand with an event that shares the same legacy and love for this city.”
If, for some reason – and I can’t imagine why if you’ve lived in Fort Worth for more than a month and aren’t a vegan or vegetarian (all due respect to you all – I have one in my family) you have not had a Kincaid’s burger, stop reading and go have one now. Wait, check that, finish reading this column and then go treat yourself.
Likewise, if you’ve never been to the Charles Schwab Challenge, well, there is now no better time than this year. The folks at Schwab put on a pretty good party, and burgers and parties go hand-in-hand.
Also, hamburger joints come and go everywhere, as do sporting events – unless they have something special that makes them last. Kincaid’s and Colonial/Schwab Challenge have that something special.
In one form or another, Colonial has the distinction of hosting the longest-running PGA Tour event held at the same location. So strong is that tradition that in 2018, after the folks at Dean & DeLuca withdrew their corporate sponsorship (good riddance), locals rallied together and held the tournament anyway.
A year later Charles Schwab became the corporate sponsor. Hopefully they will continue to be for many more years.
I’m also thinking it’s a good bet that many of the professionals who have played in the tournament over its decades made their way down the road to Kincaid’s for a post-round meal.
Kincaid’s started their local burger dynasty at their original Fort Worth location on Camp Bowie. They are still under family ownership.
Brothers Jonathan and Christian Gentry are the third generation family owners, now operating five locations. Their grandfather, O.R. Gentry, created the iconic hamburger while working as the head butcher at the Charles Kincaid’s Grocery & Market.
In 1991, O.R. passed the reins to his son Ronald Gentry, then Ronald entrusted sons Jonathan and Christian to continue the ownership legacy in 2007.
“Colonial and Kincaid’s are timeless treasures in Fort Worth that have stood the test of time for good reason. Kincaid’s is as proud of their heritage as we are ours at Colonial,” Charles Schwab Challenge Tournament Chairman Kip Adams said. “They are a fantastic addition to this year’s tournament.”
While I have no choice but to wait with anticipation for the tournament, I can go get a Kincaid’s burger now. Then, I’ll see you at the tournament – with another one.
