Methodist Justice Ministry (MJM) is honored to receive a $7,500 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation to strengthen its outreach and legal services for victims of abuse in Johnson County.
Domestic violence is a devastating reality for far too many families, especially for children in low-income households, who are five times more likely to experience abuse or neglect. Survivors often face overwhelming barriers when seeking safety, including limited access to legal protections, resources, and advocacy.
MJM, a Fort Worth-based nonprofit law firm, offers free legal representation and ongoing support to low-income individuals impacted by family violence, child abuse, and neglect. In recognition of its commitment to justice, MJM was awarded the 2024 Pro Bono Award by the State Bar of Texas.
This grant will help MJM serve more Johnson County families by covering legal costs related to protective orders, custody, and divorce proceedings, removing financial obstacles that often prevent victims from finding safety and stability. Since beginning work in the area in 2016, MJM has handled roughly 10% of its annual caseload through Cleburne courts, with demand continuing to rise.
“We have seen an increase in referrals from Johnson County as our services become more widely known,” said Jodie Connaughton, MJM’s Legal Director. “I have worked with clients who have been trying to find help for years and are so thankful to have finally found the help and support they desperately need with MJM. I look forward to being able to help more community members who have experienced family violence or child abuse even more.”
