Texas Health Fort Worth Hosts Special Reunion for Patients

Former ECMO patients reconnect with physicians and nurses

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth will host a reunion for more than 10 ECMO patients and their families. The casual, two-hour event will include a brief presentation about ECMO technology, opportunities for individuals to connect with other patients, along with light refreshments for all in attendance. Interesting facts: *Texas Health Fort Worth is a Level I Trauma Center and has earned Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers and Comprehensive Cardiac Center Certification, both from Joint Commission. *Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a machine used to pump blood through an artificial lung back into the bloodstream of the patient — and it’s about the size of a small suitcase. *ECMO therapy is often used for patients suffering from cardiac or respiratory failure. *According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 350,000 people a year experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the U.S., and just 10% of those patients survive. *Immediate intervention such as CPR, along with rapid coordination of advanced therapies, is crucial for survival and recovery.  *ECMO allows time for the heart and lungs to recover, and the process takes place outside of the patient’s body. *Established in 2021, Texas Health Fort Worth will celebrate the 5th anniversary of its ECMO Program.
