2 Fort Worth officers hurt as device accidentally discharges

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Two Fort Worth officers have been injured after a flash bang device that one was handling accidentally went off at police headquarters.

Fort Worth police say both tactical officers were transported to hospitals Tuesday night for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities say the incident happened as the officers were gathering equipment, at a police training center, as they prepared to serve a search warrant. Police say one officer was holding the flash bang device when it went off. The other officer was nearby.

Sgt. Marc Povero says one officer was being treated for hand burns. The other was being examined for hearing issues.

The explosives are discharged by officers to create a flash and bang as part of crowd control or to otherwise disorient individuals.
